Of more than 30 trials for vaccines world-wide, only 8 are in phase three. The U.S. has approved "emergency status" for three so far; the AstraZeneca vaccine, and those of Modena and Johnson & Johnson. "Emergency status" means that these can be administered without the lengthy approval processes.
AstraZeneca and Oxford University have a vaccine that has attracted 2 deals... the U.S. for 300 million doses, and Russia for manufacturing rights. The U.S. has also committed to purchase 100 million doses from the Moderna Company. As of this writing the J & J vaccine rollout has been put on hold while 6 cases of women with a very rare type of blood clot after J&J vaccination are investigated.
Even with accelerated testing and better than 10 billion dollars spent so far, the most optimistic forecast by scientists is that we will not see approved vaccines before we are several months into next year.
THE BIG IFS: IF we follow the basic steps to eradicate the virus, and IF a vaccine is proven effective, we are probably more than 6 months away from a more normal existence. There are still some vital questions to be answered. Will the new vaccine work for all age groups? How will it be dosed? After-effects?

Since this virus attacks the respiratory System, a viral test checks samples by swabbing the mucus inside the the sinus of your nose. A new system collects saliva and requires no additional additives or reagents, making it very accessible.
Both systems can be administered at home, but must then be sent to a lab for analysis. Tests administered by health organizations can yield results in minutes, but some require several days for lab results. Ask before you go to test.
WHAT IF? False positives are not uncommon, resulting in a re-test. If you are sick and untested, immediately review what to do to protect yourself and others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has, in the past bowed to political pressure and edited their advice. This seems to be corrected. Best advice is to stay isolated at home, but connect with your doctor. Mild illness of Covid-19 can be treated effectively at home. If you are having symptoms like difficulty breathing, get emergency help at once. Covid-19 and variations have proven to be quite lethal.
FOR HEALTH & WELLNESS
Reschedule non-urgent medical appointments. Some procedures can be safely postponed. Others, like follow-up cancer screenings shouldn't be missed. The bottom line is to get in touch with your doctor to determine whether you should head in for an office visit.
Prepare for new procedures. Your health care provider may ask you to wait in your car or outside the office for a bit. Other changes, like a temperature reading upon arrival might also be in place. Tele-medicine visits can be used to diagnose and treat a variety of routine concerns, and to monitor chronic conditions.
Pharmacies may offer modalities that are safer than going into the store. Drive-through windows, curbside pickup and mail-order delivery services are all safer alternatives to in-store visits. If you do need to pickup at the counter ask your doctor about receiving a 30 to 90 day supply to reduce the number of visits.
Bottom Line: Stay home if you can; Don't pass a sink without washing your hands thoroughly, Keep visitors away; Wear a mask; Disinfect all useable surfaces.
TACTICS FOR HEALTH & WELLNESS
The pandemic has been with us now for over a year, and people are tired of it. They call it a civil right to refuse to wear a mask. As a result, rather than go away and back to normalcy, such demonstrations are more often than not followed by a spike in hospitalizations and deaths. We strongly recommend the following tactics until true and lasting abatement of the pandemic is achieved:
• Wear a mask. This is not Halloween, but wear it anyhow.
• Social distancing. Six feet or more between people keeps others who might not know that they carry the virus away from you.
• Sing ‘Happy Birthday” twice. That's about the time you need to wash thoroughly wash your hands thoroughly and often, or use a hand sanitizer containing a minimum of 60% alcohol. And don’t touch your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Don’t do voodoo. Myths and misinformation abound on the internet… Use evidence-based scientific information, Your local politician is not a scientist and has other axes to grind.
• Shop smart. Older adults and those at risk of complications should use home delivery services or curbside pickup. Or let others shop for you.
• Give up cash. Money passes through many hands. Avoid it where possible. Establish an on line account for banking. Disinfect your credit cards, and swipe, insert or tap-pay instead of handing them to a cashier.
• Keep kitty kozy. Fido isn’t likely to sneeze in your face, but pets should not interact with outsiders. Use the 6 foot rule here. While they might not show symptoms, pets can carry and transmit the virus.
• Carry Alcohol wipes and pencil erasers. Gas pumps, elevator buttons, ATM machines, all should be used with care. Use a pencil eraser or pen with stylus to press buttons. Use an alcohol wipe on gas pump handles before you touch them. Use a stylus pen (with a rubber tip) or a pencil with an eraser end instead of your fingers.
• Party Hardy? Not on your life! The new etiquette is that if you feel ill, or have been in contact with someone who is, stay sequestered at home. Don't infect others.
• Sanitize surfaces. Regularly clean surfaces you touch. Wipe with soap and water, then use a sanitizer on eating surfaces, toilets, faucet handles, and doorknobs, such as tables, toilets and doorknobs. Even if you sanitize beforehand, do it again after visitors leave.
• Be self-centered. You are not being a good friend by sharing. Keep your clothes, towels, sun lotions, and the like to yourself. And don’t borrow from others. The life you save may be your own.
• Meetings Videoconferencing platforms like Zoom make business meetings, book club sessions and the like a healthy alternative.
• Dine smart. Tired of home cooking? Next best is free delivery, or at least take-out. The risk of transmission via food or food packaging is low, but eating in a crowded restaurant with your mouth open is not a great idea.
• Shake on it?. Greetings and goodbyes can be tricky at a time when avoiding close contact is key to staying safe. Holding your hand over your heart to say goodbye can be (almost) as touching as a hug.
